Sikkim

Sikkim, a beautiful hill station, stands in the northeast region of India, bordered by Bhutan, Tibet, and Nepal. Sikkim is famous for pristine Himalayan views, charming villages, glacial lakes, ancient monasteries, and an abundance of adventure. Whether you’re arriving from India or across the globe, Sikkim welcomes everyone with its warm culture, tranquil nature, and delicate food. Sikkim has various routes, but don’t worry! This Sikkim travel guide aptly addresses your “how to reach Sikkim” confusion.

How to Reach Sikkim

By Air:

If your priority is time, choosing an airway will be the best. Pakyong is the only airport in Sikkim; however, it’s not well connected to major Indian cities and is not fully reliable due to weather and hill terrain. So the best routes are—

  • Fly to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) from major cities like Bangalore and Mumbai. Then, take a ride from Bagdogra to Gangtok.

Reach Pakyong Airport directly from Kolkata or Delhi after checking operational status.

By Train:

The train is ideal if you’re a budget traveler and have no hurry. Currently, there isn’t any railway station in Sikkim, so the nearest stations are NJP or Siliguri. Travel via–

  • Delhi to NJP by Vande Bharat Express (12343)
  • Bangalore to NJP by New Tinsukia Exp (22501)
  • Mumbai to Siliguri by Karmabhoomi Exp (22511)

By Road:

Reaching Sikkim via road is travelers’ favorite, as you’ll be enjoying the scenic beauty of Teesta, dense forests, snow-capped mountain peaks, and much more alongside the road. Sikkim is well connected to major Indian cities by road, and NH10 is the primary gateway to Sikkim. Start your journey to Sikkim from–

  • Siliguri/Bagdogra/NJP Station
  • From here, you have 3 choices: travel via a private taxi for the most comfortable transfer, or choose a shared jeep/SNT bus as a cheaper alternative to reach Sikkim.

Popular Routes—

Route Distance Travel Time Highlights
Siliguri to Gangtok ~114 km 3.5 – 4.5 Hours The most popular route passes through Sevoke Forest and Coronation Bridge
Bagdogra to Gangtok ~125 km 4.5 – 5.5 Hours Ideal for those flying in, merges into NH10
NJP to Gangtok ~120 km 4 – 5 Hours Standard route for train travelers, easily available taxi
Darjeeling to Gangtok ~98 km 3.5 – 4 Hours Scenic “Hill to Hill” ride through Melli & tea gardens
Kalimpong to Gangtok ~75 km 2.5 – 3 Hours Shortest inter-hill route, steep but highly picturesque ride

Travel Advisory

  • October-May is the best time to visit Sikkim (avoid monsoon due to landslides/roadblocks).
  • Check forecasts, as flights and roads are weather-sensitive.
  • Pre-book a shared/private cab for a guaranteed and hassle-free journey to Sikkim.
  • Carrying a valid ID/entry permit is essential, as vehicles are stopped at the Rangpo checkpost for verification.
